Clean a photo before you share it

Cover the faces, cut the frame, and strip out the hidden data. Nothing is uploaded — the work happens on your device.

Drop a photo here

or click to browse — JPEG, PNG, WEBP, HEIC*

*HEIC only where the browser supports it (Safari).

  • The photo stays on this device. There is no image server to send it to.
  • Crop it, drop the colour, cover the faces and anything else that identifies.
  • The file you download carries no location, serial number or name.

What a photo gives away

Phones and cameras write a block of data into every photo they take. You cannot see it in the picture, and it travels with the file when you post it, sell something with it, or send it to one person.

Coordinates, to a few metres
Where the photo was taken. On a photo taken at home, that is your address.
The camera’s serial number
The same number is written into every photo that camera takes, which ties an anonymous account to one in your name.
Date and time
Where you were at a given hour, and where you will probably be at that hour next week.
The faces in the frame
A face can be searched against the rest of the web.

Most of the harm is ordinary: a for-sale ad photographed in the hallway, a picture of a child posted where anyone can read where it was taken, a photo sent to one person who later forwards it.

Crop

Cuts away the edge of the frame: the street sign, the door number, the letter on the desk.

Hide

Covers faces, or anything else you drag a box over. The detail underneath is not hidden, it is thrown away, so it cannot be brought back.

Strip

Rebuilds the file from the picture alone. Coordinates, serial numbers, times and names have nothing left to travel in.
